I think the biggest surprise to me was the outperformance of both the financials (XLF) and consumer discretionary (XLY). Comparatively speaking, the Dow (DIA) closed on the lows for the year while the Russell 2000 (IWM) and Nasdaq (QQQ) outperformed. Energy (XLE) and utilities (XLU) were crushed. Here’s a look at the 2012 VWAPs for each sector (BOLD = outperformed SPY; RED = price closed below VWAP for the year)
- $SPY = 137.63
- $DIA = 129.01
- $QQQ = 64.60
- $IWM = 80.23
- $IYT = 91.79
- $XLB = 35.97
- $XLE = 70.16
- $XLF = 15
- $XLI = 36.17
- $XLK = 28.99
- $XLP = 34.44
- $XLU = 35.70
- $XLV = 37.93
- $XLY = 44.50
